Shared Bike Won’t Unlock: Fixes

You scanned a Meituan Bike (美团单车), Hello Bike / HelloBike (哈啰单车, also written 哈罗), or Qingju (青桔单车) and the lock stayed shut — or the ride will not end. The fixes below use the same causes and the same fee ranges as the shared-bike guide. Alipay Scan opens all three brands. HelloBike’s standalone app is Helloride. Qingju can also open inside DiDi or WeChat.

Do not leave until the screen says “Ride ended”. A photo of the locked bike, with the bike number visible, is what support needs if the timer keeps running.

Locked the bike, timer still running

This is the most common complaint. The lock did not register, or the phone lost data at the moment of locking.

Close and reopen the mini-program. If the timer is still going, photograph the locked bike and contact in-app support. They can end the ride remotely. Walking away can add a lost-bike charge on top of the running fare. Some models auto-lock. Most do not. Listen for the click, then look at the screen.

“You are outside the parking zone”

GPS drift of 10–20 m is enough, and so is stopping outside the blue P circle. The fence is in the lock, not a painted line you can argue with. If you are about 15 m outside the boundary, the app will not close the trip.

Follow the arrow to the nearest legal zone, usually 1–3 minutes of riding. Do not abandon the bike unlocked. Some apps let you end outside a zone for about ¥5–20. Returning outside the operating area is in the same ¥5–20 band. Parking outside a P zone can be ¥5–50. Either fee is cheaper than a timer that never stops.

Before the next ride, check that the destination has a P circle. If it does not, plan to walk the last block. Do not leave a bike on tactile paving, in a subway entrance, at a bus stop, or in a shop doorway.

QR code will not scan

Dirt, sun glare, a scratched sticker, or a bike someone else has already reserved. Wipe the code, step out of direct sun, and try the code under the seat or on the rear lock. If the app says “in use”, pick another bike.

Skip a sticker that looks stuck on top of the original. If the sticker is raised or torn, or the app asks for a deposit to a personal account, use the next bike.

Lock will not open

The bike has no signal, the lock battery is flat, or Bluetooth and location are off. Turn both on, wait 30 seconds, and retry. Then walk away. You are not charged for a bike you never unlocked. Do not force the lever.

Location for Alipay should be always, not only while the app is open, and mobile data has to be up. A dead connection in a narrow alley is a common reason the scan never loads the bike. If the mini-program asks for identity, finish passport verification in Alipay or WeChat Pay first. The age minimum is 12 for a pedal bike and 16 for an e-bike.

Card declined at unlock

This is your bank’s fraud filter, not Alipay. A small foreign charge from a new merchant looks suspicious. Switch to another linked card, or ask the issuer to allow “Alipay / Ant Group”. The same idea on WeChat is in WeChat Pay not working. Alipay’s decline steps are in Alipay payment failed.

A ¥1.50 ride sits under the ¥200 line, so the 3% international-card fee does not apply to a normal bike fare. Deposit is usually ¥0 on a verified Alipay account. If the app did take a refundable deposit, request the release in the app. It goes back to the card.

Bike is unrideable

Flat tyre, slipped chain, bent wheel, missing pedal. Squeeze the brakes, press the tyres, rock the seat, and look at the chain before you leave. Tap Report fault, end the ride within the first two minutes (usually free), and take another bike. The same window is “the first couple of minutes” if you notice the fault as soon as you unlock.

Phone dead, cannot end the ride

Cold weather, the camera, GPS, and the screen drain the battery. Start with the battery above 40%, or carry a power bank. If the phone dies mid-ride, lock the bike. The fare stops when the lock registers. Contact support when you have a connection again.

Bike towed or moved

A bike left in a no-parking area can be moved by a cleanup crew. Contact support with the bike number. They can trace it and waive a lost-bike charge. Do not assume the worst from a missing frame.

E-bike, if that is the bike that failed

The scan is the same. The rules are not. E-bikes are 16+, a helmet is required, the motor is capped at 25 km/h, and the fare is roughly twice a pedal bike, typically ¥2–3 per 15 minutes. No helmet on the bike means do not ride it. Central Beijing and central Shanghai are mostly pedal bikes. The full notes are in the shared-bike guide.

FAQ

The timer is still running after I locked the bike.

No. Alipay Scan opens Meituan Bike (美团单车), HelloBike (哈啰 / 哈罗), and Qingju (青桔). Helloride is optional if you want HelloBike’s English mode.
