Alipay payment failed — seven fixes that usually help

Work the row that matches the screen, then try one small test payment. The most common failure is not Alipay. It is your bank declining the first cross-border charge. China Daily notes that binding a foreign card needs the issuer to accept the authorisation (source). The full setup is Alipay for visitors.

Call the international number on the card and authorise Alipay / Ant Group, China, then retry once. If the message is about a cap, open Me → Bank Cards → Limits before you tap pay again ([limits](/pay/troubleshoot/alipay-foreigner-limit/)).

Symptom Usual cause What to do
Card will not link The bank flagged the charge as fraud Call the international number. Authorise “Alipay / Ant Group, China”. Try a second physical card. Prepaid and most virtual cards are rejected with no workaround.
Payment declined mid-trip Single or annual limit, or an expired card Check Me → Bank Cards → Limits. Split the purchase or switch cards. A bill above ¥200 also adds 3% of the full amount — that line is a fee, not always a failure.
Verification stuck Glare, a cropped photo, or a name mismatch Passport verification. Reshoot in daylight. Match the passport spelling exactly.
Face scan keeps failing Backlight, glasses, or a busy hour Natural light, glasses off, face in the circle. Retry off-peak.
“Can’t receive money” Foreign-card wallets cannot pay a person Merchant QR codes work. Person-to-person, red packets, balance top-up, and cash advance do not. Ask for cash or use another wallet.
Refund not showing Card refunds take 3–10 business days Keep the receipt. Track it in Bills. Disputes can be opened for about 180 days.
Nothing scans No data connection Both gestures — you scan them, or they scan you — need internet. Sort an eSIM or roaming before you depend on the phone.

If a network proxy or similar tool is turned on, switch it off for the payment attempt. It can break the wallet session. We do not name or recommend products in that category. SMS problems are a separate page: Can’t receive SMS.

A green confirmation means that attempt cleared. Show it to the cashier. It is not your payment code — do not treat a success screen as something a stranger should scan.

If two careful attempts still fail, pay with WeChat Pay or with cash (¥300–500 in small notes is the floor from the Alipay field report). Hammering the same decline can deepen a fraud lock at the bank.

How to capture evidence (helps support)

If you contact wallet support or your bank:

  1. Screenshot the exact error text (English or Chinese). Do not screenshot your Pay / 收付款 code.
  2. Note the time in China Standard Time (UTC+8) once you are in mainland China.
  3. Mask card numbers before you send images anywhere public.
  4. Keep the merchant name and approximate amount.

Do not post live QR codes or full passport pages on social media.

FAQ

Will retrying ten times help?
Usually it hurts. The bank may harden the block. Fix the cause, wait, and try once.

Does airplane mode help?
It sometimes wakes an SMS radio (SMS fixes). It does not override an issuer decline.
