WeChat Pay fee waiver — standing rule vs campaigns

Draft: not yet verified in the live app. Fees, limits, and menus change—confirm on the in-app payment screen and in the provider’s official Help.Verification status: DRAFT — verify in the live app before publish

Two different ideas get mixed up: the standing fee on an international card, and a promotional waiver for people linking a card for the first time. Both can change. Read Wallet → Help Center, and the fee line on the payment you are about to make. The full table sits on the setup guide.

a Standing rule

For an international card in WeChat Pay:

  • Free when the transaction is ¥200 or less.
  • 3% of the full amount when the transaction is above ¥200 — not 3% of only the part over ¥200.
  • If the payment is refunded, the fee is refunded proportionally.
  • Your own bank may add a foreign-exchange or foreign-transaction fee. That is separate. The exchange rate is set by the card network and the issuing bank, not by WeChat.

b First-time waiver

People linking a card for the first time often see a promotional waiver: recently 60–90 days, up to ¥1,000 a day. The banner is in Wallet, usually right after the card links. If the banner is gone, assume only the standing ¥200 rule applies until the payment screen shows otherwise.

What to do before a large purchase

  1. Open the payment confirmation and read the fee line.
  2. If a promo banner exists, open its terms, the daily cap, and the end date.
  3. Caps still apply during a waiver: ¥6,500 per transaction, ¥50,000 per month, ¥65,000 per year. Confirm those in Help Center too.
  4. Alipay’s own fee screen is a different page: Alipay 3% fee.

A Beijing English notice has described extra waivers for first-time international-card binding (Beijing payment services news). Treat dated campaign write-ups as background. The Wallet banner is the rule for your account today.

How to capture evidence (helps support)

If you contact wallet support or your bank:

  1. Screenshot the exact fee line (English or Chinese). Do not screenshot a Money (收付款) payment code.
  2. Note the time in China Standard Time (UTC+8) once you are in mainland China.
  3. Mask card numbers before you send images anywhere public.
  4. Keep the merchant name and approximate amount.

Do not post live QR codes or full passport pages on social media.

When to stop retrying

A fee you did not expect is not fixed by paying again. Cancel if you can, or pay a smaller bill that stays at ¥200 or below. If the payment itself is declined, use the not-working checklist.

The ¥200 / 3% rule, proportional refunds, and the recent 60–90 day waiver follow the WeChat Pay Help Center international-card rules. Promotions change. Confirm the current banner in Wallet → Help Center. China Arrive is not affiliated with Tencent or WeChat.

FAQ

Can China Arrive promise today’s waiver?
No. We publish the standing fee and the recent promotional range, and you confirm the banner in Wallet.

Is the 3% only on the part above ¥200?
No. Above ¥200, the fee is 3% of the full amount. ¥200 or less is free.
