WeChat Pay: fix “international card not supported”

You tried to add a foreign card and WeChat refused it, or checkout says the card type is not supported. Work through the checks once. Repeated taps can look like fraud to your bank.
The add-card path is step 5 of Set up WeChat Pay: Wallet → Bank Cards → Add a Bank Card → Agree on the Weixin Pay User Service Agreement.
1 Is this network accepted?
International cards that link: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Diners Club, Discover, and international UnionPay. Credit or debit, issued outside mainland China. Prepaid cards and most virtual cards do not work, even when the logo matches. Use a physical credit or debit card.
2 The bank blocked the first charge
Call the international number on the card and ask them to allow WeChat Pay / Tenpay, China. HSBC, Citi, Chase, and banks in Singapore are widely reported to succeed. Some UK banks are stricter. Approve the SMS or push they send, wait, then try the link once more.
Also check
- Name mismatch. The real-name passport spelling has to match the card closely. Fix the passport step first. Real-name blocks.
- Wrong product. An international card pays merchants, scan-to-pay, ride codes, and mini programs. It does not send red packets, transfer person-to-person, top up the wallet, or withdraw to a bank. “Not supported” on those screens is expected.
- Try the other wallet. If WeChat still refuses the card, set up Alipay with the same card. Acceptance can differ. Keep ¥500–1,500 in cash for the same day.
- Do not keep tapping Add. Fix the bank side, wait, then try once or twice. More attempts can deepen a fraud lock.
Open the card list from Me → Pay and Services (or Services) → Wallet → Bank Cards. If the card is missing after the bank said yes, add it again from this screen.
How to capture evidence (helps support)
If you contact wallet support or your bank:
- Screenshot the exact error text (English or Chinese).
- Note the time in China Standard Time (UTC+8) once you are in mainland China.
- Mask card numbers before you send images anywhere public.
- Keep the merchant name and approximate amount.
Do not post live QR codes or full passport pages on social media.
When to stop retrying
If two careful attempts fail after the bank has allowed Tenpay and the passport name matches, stop. Use Alipay or cash for that purchase.
Source note
Accepted networks and the Tenpay bank call follow the WeChat Pay Help Center international-card rules. Confirm the add-card screen in your build. China Arrive is not affiliated with Tencent, WeChat, or any bank named here.
FAQ
Does “not supported” mean tourists cannot use WeChat Pay?
No. It usually means that card, or that action, is blocked. Another physical card, or Alipay, may work.
Should I keep tapping Add Card?
No. Sort the bank block, wait, then try again once or twice.
