Alipay foreign card limits — verified and unverified

Passport verification is what changes the ceiling. These figures are approximate. The only authoritative number is the page in your app: Me → Bank Cards → Limits. Setup context is Alipay for visitors.

  • Verified (passport bio page plus a live selfie): about ¥35,000 per payment.
  • Unverified (card linked, identity skipped): about ¥5,000 per payment. Train tickets and some hotel bookings refuse this tier outright.
  • Annual, verified: published ceilings sit around US$50,000, shared across Alipay accounts tied to the same passport. Unverified annual caps are far lower. A two-week trip rarely hits the annual figure. The reason to verify is the trains and the hotels, not the annual maths.

Why public pages disagree

A China Daily summary has described foreign-card mobile payments with an annual limit of US$50,000 and a single transaction limit of US$5,000. Other write-ups quote Alipay’s per-payment cap as about ¥35,000 or as ¥50,000, depending on the source and the account tier. Those are not the same number. WeChat’s own caps (¥6,500 / ¥50,000 a month / ¥65,000 a year) are a different product (WeChat Help).

Use Me → Bank Cards → Limits for the payment you are about to make. If that screen and a webpage disagree, the screen wins.

If a payment stops at a cap

  1. Split the bill only when the cashier agrees, ideally into pieces at ¥200 or below so you also avoid the 3% fee.
  2. Switch cards, or pay with WeChat Pay — remembering WeChat’s own ¥6,500 single-payment cap.
  3. If you never finished the passport step, do that before you retry a train or hotel booking (verification, 12306).
  4. Your bank’s own daily overseas cap can stop you before Alipay’s cap does.

How to capture evidence (helps support)

If you contact wallet support or your bank:

  1. Screenshot the exact limit text (English or Chinese). Do not screenshot a Pay / 收付款 code.
  2. Note the time in China Standard Time (UTC+8) once you are in mainland China.
  3. Mask card numbers before you send images anywhere public.
  4. Keep the merchant name and approximate amount.

Do not post live QR codes or full passport pages on social media.

Source note

Ceilings follow Alipay’s in-app help centre as summarised for visitors in November 2026, including the published US$5,000 / ¥50,000 disagreement. Promotions and tiers change. Confirm under Me → Bank Cards → Limits. China Arrive is not affiliated with Ant Group or Alipay.

FAQ

Are the USD caps the same as the RMB caps?
No. US$5,000, ¥35,000, and ¥50,000 all appear in public summaries and they are not one number. Trust the limit page in the app.

Do I need to verify for a two-week trip of small meals?
The annual cap is rarely the problem. Verify anyway if you want train tickets or some hotel bookings to go through.
