Alipay foreign card fees — 3% of the full amount

The platform fee is not progressive. A payment of ¥200 or below is free. The moment a single payment goes above ¥200, Alipay charges 3% of the entire amount, not 3% of only the part over the line. A ¥210 gift is ¥6.30. A ¥20,000 purchase is ¥600. Your bank may add its own foreign-transaction fee, typically 0–3%, on top. Campaigns change. Read the confirmation line, and any banner under Me → Bank Cards. The full walkthrough is Alipay for visitors.
The illustration uses a ¥210 payment so the arithmetic is visible: 3% of 210 is 6.30. A ¥180 coffee on its own should not show this platform fee. If it does, check whether a tip or a second item pushed the total over ¥200.
WeChat Pay uses the same ¥200 / full-amount 3% rule, and often waives it for a first-linked card ([WeChat fee waiver](/pay/troubleshoot/wechat-pay-fee-waiver/)). Alipay’s waivers are occasional campaigns, not that standing first-link offer.
What a few bills actually cost
| Purchase | Alipay fee | What you notice |
|---|---|---|
| ¥38 noodles | ¥0 | Nothing from Alipay |
| ¥198, just under the line | ¥0 | Still free |
| ¥210 | ¥6.30 | 3% of 210, not of the ¥10 over the line |
| ¥1,200 hotel night | ¥36 | About one coffee, before bank FX |
| ¥2,000 | ¥60 | A hotel-scale bill |
| ¥8,000 | ¥240 | A real line item |
| ¥10,000 | ¥300 | Straight 3% |
| ¥20,000 | ¥600 | Same rule |
The China Daily foreign-card page describes the same ¥200 threshold for mobile payments (source). The live confirmation line still wins.
Three legitimate ways to pay less
- Split under the line. For ¥380, ask to pay ¥190 twice. Tourist-area cashiers often agree. Chains may not. Do not fight a no.
- A card that does not add its own FX fee. The field report names Chase Sapphire, Capital One Venture, and Schwab debit as examples. Your card agreement is what counts. China Arrive is not selling a card.
- Open the promo banner if Me → Bank Cards shows one after linking. If the banner is absent, assume the standing 3% rule.
What the 3% is not
It is separate from your bank’s foreign-transaction fee. Refunds of the card charge often take 3–10 business days. Keep the receipt and track the refund in Bills. A dispute window of about 180 days is what travellers are told to expect.
How to capture evidence (helps support)
If you contact wallet support or your bank:
- Screenshot the exact fee line (English or Chinese). Do not screenshot your Pay / 收付款 code.
- Note the time in China Standard Time (UTC+8) once you are in mainland China.
- Mask card numbers before you send images anywhere public.
- Keep the merchant name and approximate amount.
Do not post live QR codes or full passport pages on social media.
Source note
The ¥200 line and the full-amount 3% follow Alipay’s in-app help centre as summarised for visitors in November 2026. Promotions change. Confirm the banner and the charge under Me → Bank Cards. China Arrive is not affiliated with Ant Group or Alipay.
FAQ
Is the fee ever zero above ¥200?
Only when a campaign banner says so. Treat that as temporary and read its end date.
Why did a ¥180 coffee show a fee?
Unusual for the platform fee. Screenshot the breakdown and see whether the total, a tip, or a different fee type crossed ¥200.
